Members’ small change changes lives

See the faces on this page? When you allow your elec­tric bills to be round­ed to the next whole dol­lar through Oper­a­tion Round Up, you are giv­ing to these indi­vid­u­als.

For the aver­age mem­ber, Oper­a­tion Round Up dona­tions total around $6 a year. That doesn’t seem like much. But for the fam­i­lies in our com­mu­ni­ty who ben­e­fit from those dona­tions, it means an awful lot.

Thanks to the gen­eros­i­ty of Coastal Elec­tric Coop­er­a­tive mem­bers, 20 local stu­dents are more pre­pared to tack­le the next leg of their education—to the tune of almost $60,000 in schol­ar­ship mon­ey!

In addi­tion to exist­ing schol­ar­ship oppor­tu­ni­ties from past years, the Coastal Elec­tric Coop­er­a­tive Foun­da­tion award­ed a new schol­ar­ship this year, the John Toby Woods Jr. Marine and Nat­ur­al Sci­ences Schol­ar­ship. The schol­ar­ship is worth $5,000 and renew­able for up to four years.

It hon­ors the lega­cy of late Board Pres­i­dent John Toby Woods Jr. and aims to sup­port local stu­dents pur­su­ing degrees in marine and nat­ur­al sci­ences focused on the local coastal envi­ron­ment, includ­ing dis­ci­plines like marine biol­o­gy, oceanog­ra­phy, marine con­ser­va­tion and relat­ed fields. The very first recip­i­ent of the John Toby Woods Jr. Marine and Nat­ur­al Sci­ences Schol­ar­ship is Eliz­a­beth Latimer of Rich­mond Hill.
