Building power poles—that’s routine for Coastal Electric Cooperative. But recently co-op employees put their construction skills to work to build beds for local kids in need.

During a training day on Feb. 19, Coastal Electric teamed up with Sleep in Heavenly Peace of Hinesville to build 10 beds for children in Liberty County. Employees of all backgrounds— accountants, IT professionals, customer service reps, linemen, engineers and even the CEO—worked side by side with sawdust flying and hammers banging.

Coastal Electric employees cut lumber, prepped boards for drilling and sanded. The team assembled, branded and stained each headboard and footboard.

The project will help Sleep in Heavenly Peace achieve their mission to make sure “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”

According to Sleep in Heavenly Peace, many children across the U.S. and in our own communities go without beds—or even a pillow—to sleep on. This can harm their happiness and health. That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in as a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering beds to children and families in need. Each donated bed comes with a mattress, sheets and pillows for a good night’s sleep.

Coastal Electric’s involvement with Sleep in Heavenly Peace is thanks to IT Manager Terry Cook, who also serves as co-chair of the Hinesville chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

For an electric cooperative like Coastal Electric, the mission is about much more than just delivering electricity. It’s about meeting community needs and making life better!
